A few weeks ago I discovered the work of painter, Amy Sherald on Pinterest. This Baltimore-based artist blends portraiture, social commentary and satire into each of her pieces. As I was checking out Amy’s bio I was delighted to see that she had studied at my alma mater, Spelman College, under my art professor, Dr. Arturo Lindsay. I could immediately tell that I liked this woman and her work.
Sherald has had a prestigious art career since her college days, studying in Panama, Peru, Norway and China.
To me, her paintings are an interesting look at Black identity, each with a twist that makes the viewer question the identities that are imposed on African-Americans as a consequence of racist ideas. I find her paintings absolutely fascinating.
You can view Sherald’s portfolio on her website, and contact her directly if there is a piece that speaks to you.
