If you haven’t already, it’s time for you to head to your local bookstore or rev up the iPad and check out the latest issue of Fast Company. On the cover is Executive Creative Director and President of fashion powerhouse J. Crew, Jenna Lyons. For those who love fashion and design, you will likely agree that Jenna Lyons has become a household name in our world. We’ve watched her transform a brand; taken a peek into her home when it was featured in Domino years ago; and have fallen in love with the new designs that she has guided J. Crew to produce every year. She is one of the most powerful voices in fashion and design today, and when I read the Fast Company article, The Devil Wears J. Crew, it was like reading a how-to book on how to create a successful brand, and I was in awe.
While I don’t talk much about business on this blog, at the end of the day I’m a business woman running a lifestyle brand, and women like Jenna are an absolute inspiration. She knows how to run a brand built on design, where her eye and what she loves comes first.
She has created a style over the years that sets the trends, rather than follows them.
And from the looks of her office, she stays highly engaged in the world of design.
Samantha Hahn prints hang on her wall.
A cool lucite chair sits in the corner of her office.
And Warby Parker-esque glasses are part of the “geek chic” style that she enjoys wearing.
I don’t say this often, but the Fast Company article is a must-read for anyone out there working to start or expand a brand. You are sure to be inspired.
