ENITAN, a name of Yoruba, Nigerian origin meaning person of story is the name of a new vintage furniture company, founded by actor and activist, Gbenga Akinnagbe. Known for roles on The Wire, 24, and Independence Day: Resurgence, Akinnagbe is now diving into a new creative arena – home decor. A celebration of his Nigerian heritage and a new take on classic european furniture, ENITAN offers one-of-a-kind pieces that have been reimagined, upholstered in Dutch African wax print fabrics. The furnishings merge bright, bold patterns with classic silhouettes, and are the perfect story-telling pieces for any interior. Launched this spring at Okay Space in Brooklyn’s trendy Williamsburg neighborhood, the initial collection includes dining chairs, side chairs and sofas that are sure to add color and a cultural touch to any space.
We sat down with Gbenga on Facebook Live to discuss his new venture into design, the inspiration behind the new collection, and what we can expect to see next from ENITAN.
