LA Magazine Coverage of Room & Board LA Book Party

Last year we had a fabulous book party at the Room & Board in Culver City, Los Angeles. We like to say “book party” because, in partnership with Room & Board, we have updated the idea of a typical book signing event. We don’t want you to come just for a signing, we want you to come for an experience that truly celebrates what our book, REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul is all about. DJ D’Auria had us dancing to the soulful tunes you’ll find in the house tours of REMIX. Celebrity chef, Chef Ameera delighted us with her healthy soul food menu. And throughout Room & Board you could find vignettes “remixed” by AphroChic.

Bryan and I gave a design talk, speaking about the inspiration for REMIX, and the vignettes we created at Room & Board.

Design stars came out, including my Spelman Sister, Tanika Ray.

Matthew Lanphier, interior designer to the Kardashians was in the house. You can see a beautiful Studio City home he designed throughout the pages of REMIX. With him was one of our favorite artists Lana Gomez, recent CH+D Awards winner, whose art is featured in REMIX.

LA bloggers were in attendance, including Megan Arquette of Beach Bungalow 8.

Abby Stone of Apartment Therapy and Christian May of Maison 21.

Chef Ameera (above) created a phenomenal menu for the event. She brought our focus on soulful style to life with delicious vegan dishes including fried chicken, chili, and the yummiest sweet potato cupcakes ever!

We always have fun styling our own vignettes in the Room & Board stores. In this living room we used two of the hottest colors this year – cerulean blue and mimosa yellow, with a strong neutral gray, to design what we’re calling “a modern bachelorette pad”.

No bachelorette pad would be complete without a fierce Beyonce gallery wall featuring Room & Board’s new Steel Frames in gold. Bryan had a lot of fun curating the images for this vignette and it was a hit at the party!

In the bedroom we added a lot of pattern and texture, using our The Vibe and Silhouette pillows with Room & Board’s Jacquard Wool Zig-Zag bedding.

In the bedroom a black and white photo of Tina Turner add a little “diva style” to the vignette.

Our Haze Mimosa Runner added a pop of color to the dining room table. Above the credenza, we created a stunning focal point with a wall display of Room & Board’s collection of handmade Makenge Baskets.

Thank you to our book tour partner, Room & Board, to our media partner, Los Angeles Magazine, and to everyone who came out to support our LA book party! You can see more images from the event over at Los Angeles Magazine.

The REMIX E-Book

Today I am so excited to take you into the making of the e-book version of REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul. When we started this journey to making a book, we always knew we wanted to do something distinctive, something that no one else had done before. In the hard copy of REMIX you’ll find original ideas like our “chic tips” and house tour playlists, but with an e-book there is so much more we’ve been able do to make the content come alive. With our team at Potter Style we were able to create the first interior design book specifically made for iBooks. What does that mean? Instead of a flat e-book where you just turn the page, the REMIX e-book has been created to be interactive with special content in mind – how-to videos, designer interviews, a downloadable Spotify playlist, social media integration and added design tips.

There are some amazing videos in the e-book created by award-winning videographer, Leon S. Belt. In various cities, Leon shot interviews with the homeowners featured in the book, bringing their stories to life in a way you’ve never seen before in a design book. We also created how-to videos featuring some great ideas on mixing pattern and collecting art. You guys are going to love them!

No detail was overlooked in the e-book. You can click on pictures for added design tips.

And even listen to a special playlist of the music featured in the book.

If you’re a design-enthusiast who loves interactive content the REMIX e-book has just what you’re looking for. Loaded with videos, tips, music and a fully interactive resource section, it’s the on-the-go design book with something for everyone. We wanted to offer something different and engaging that you won’t want to put down. We truly hope you love it as much as we do! You can download REMIX on iBooks.

Inside Our Jonathan Adler Book Party

On November 21st we had a festive book party event at the Jonathan Adler in Old City Philadelphia. The store is so bright and fun, and our books fit in perfectly with the happy and colorful decor. Throughout the night we met with some of our favorite people in the Philadelphia design community, and family and friends who came out to support REMIX.

Jonathan Adler pieces are some of our faves, and were featured throughout REMIX. We loved this bright pink Juju hat that was put up the night of the party.

It was truly a friends and family event. Here is my mom holding up her copy of REMIX.

Yummy bites were served throughout the evening on pretty Jonathan Adler trays.

The store was packed with family and friends.

Here we are with Naomi Stein of Design Manifest and Molly Andrews of Chairloom.

Our friend Amber Skymer was in the house. She is the owner of ReMod Gallery, one of our favorite vintage stores. You can find information about ReMod in the resource section of REMIX.

A family photo with my mother and grandmother, and Bryan’s sister, mother and father.

And we couldn’t end the night without taking a picture with the Jonathan Adler Philly family. A great crew that threw a fabulous event!

Inside Our Room & Board New York Book Party

On November 14, 2013 we had an amazing book party at the Room & Board in SoHo.  I have to say party, because the atmosphere at Room & Board was electric that night.  With over 200 guests, beats from DJ Kwame kept the party going, and amazing soul food by Poppy’s in Brooklyn kept everyone in high spirits.  Copies of REMIX were flying out the door, and we had the most fun ever remixing Room & Board with pieces from their new accessories line, AphroChic textiles, african wax prints from Origins Style x Nasozi, a juju hat from L’aviva Home, and art by Andre Woolery.

Andre Woolery’s painting of Erykah Badu was a show-stopper that night.  It showed just how one piece of art can bring soul, color and pattern into a room.

Bryan and I had so much fun meeting guests and signing books.  Costume Designer, Derica Cole Washington came ready to celebrate REMIX, wearing a coat in the same mimosa shade as our cover.

We remixed a Room & Board dining room vignette with their new Pigeon Toe Collection and colorful AphroChic placemats.  Food was a part of the evening, with a yummy soul food menu that included cornbread and caramel desserts.

L’aviva Home provided us with a stunning white juju hat for the evening.  It was a wonderful way to add some African style to the bedroom.  We also layered in fashion illustrations to go along with our Brooklyn Life pillows.

The guest list was extraordinary.  Design Stars Danielle Colding and Brooks Atwood were in the house and enjoying the vignettes.

Fashion designer, and the designer of my dress that evening, Reuben Reuel, made an appearance.

We were excited to have Keija Minor, Editor in Chief of Brides Magazine, attend.

And so many of our homeowners were in attendance, including Kalyn Chandler of Effie’s Paper and her husband Todd.

Bryan with textile designer Malene Barnett.

Jeanine with Ruthie Ackerman from the Tory Burch Foundation.

Jeanine and Bryan with Veronica Rivero and Anllelic Lazado from Huffington Post.

Designing ladies Karen Young of Hammocks and High Tea; Nasozi and Anishka Clarke of Ishka Designs.

Jeanine and Bryan with Patrick Cline, photographer for REMIX and founder of UPLO.

Jeanine and Bryan with DJ Kwame.

A Look At The Room & Board DC Book Party

On November 7th we held our book launch at the Room & Board in Washington DC.  The night was filled with soulful music, stylish vignettes remixed by AphroChic, soul food by celebrity chef, Chef Rock Harper, and a host of great guests.

We remixed three vignettes on the fourth floor of the showroom.  It was so much fun integrating AphroChic style with the modern furnishings at Room & Board.  We were excited to feature new pieces from the store’s Fall accessories collection along with our colorful textiles.  It was a perfect combination!

Bryan and I gave a talk during the event, sharing the inspiration behind REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul.

Chef Rock Harper served up a delicious menu.  These sausage sandwiches were our favorite.

DJ Civil had us rocking to soulful grooves all night long.  And yes, there was some dancing on the dance floor.

We featured the paper cuts of local artist Janelle Washington in Room & Board’s new gold frames.  I want these for our home now.

Bryan and I had so much fun meeting everyone who attended while signing books.

It was truly one of the most amazing nights.  You can see more images from the party over at Revamp.
