AphroChic Panel & Book Signing At High Point Market

Our first book tour event at High Point Market was an amazing experience!  We hosted a wonderful panel of designers and editors for a discussion, From All Corners: Exploring Diversity in Design in the 21st Century.

Bryan moderated the conversation with interior designers Danielle Colding and Sandra Espinet, stylist Angela Belt, HuffPost Home Lifestyle Editor, Jessica Cumberbatch-Anderson, and me.

The conversation touched on several topics including the representation of women of color in design; tips for interior designers working with clients who want a global feel; and concepts growing out of REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul, our new book.

Stylist, Angela Belt discussed how she mastered a diverse mix of influences in the homes featured in REMIX.

We were honored to have our friend Sandra Espinet, the author of The Well-Traveled Home on our panel.

Danielle Colding wrote the foreword for REMIX, and discussed creating spaces with cultural style for clients.

Bryan and I had so much fun signing books for the first time, and we can’t wait to do it again next week at our official launch event in Washington DC.

REMIX Featured On HuffPost Home

Check out excerpts from our book, REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul on HuffPost Home this week, as Bryan and I discuss the culture of color.

We particularly loved the interior of LA homeowner Joy Simmons who tied the colors in her home to her vast art collection filled with cultural pieces.

The Bienenstock Furniture Library in High Point

I am so excited to bring you more from our trip to High Point.  In preparation for our book tour event at High Point Market, we learned about an amazing center of design – the Bienenstock Furniture Library.  We partnered with the Furniture Library for the sale of our book, and also learned about their incredible history.  It is home to the world’s largest collection of books on furniture and interior design.  They have books that date back all the way to the 17th Century.  We were thrilled to find out that their vast collection of 8000 volumes is also very diverse.  You can find books about African-American furniture maker Thomas Day (who is featured in our book), and now, our book REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul is part of their permanent collection.  If you love the history of design, and want to learn in a modern research facility, a visit to the Furniture Library in High Point is a must.  We are very proud to be a part of their collection!

I am so excited to give you another peek inside our book REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul.  In the November issue of Redbook Magazine, on page 144, you can get a glimpse of this gorgeous bedroom designed by Vanessa De Vargas of Turquoise LA.  This home was one of our favorites, filled with the bright colors and patterns that we love at AphroChic.

On the right is talented interior designer Vanessa De Vargas with the owner of this beautiful Los Angeles interior featured in REMIX.

Check out our tips for mixing prints on page 144 of the November issue of Redbook. It’s on newsstands now.

Styling Art In REMIX

In REMIX: Decorating With Culture, Objects and Soul, art takes center stage in each interior that we shot.  From highlighting beautiful gallery walls to unique collections of original art, our stylist, Angela Belt, worked to ensure that the art collections in each home truly shined.

Particular attention was paid to curating collections made up of the homeowner’s original pieces.

At times there were so many pieces to choose from that we had to pare down.

We had an excellent team that installed each piece.

Works were arranged to create the perfect shot for our photographer, Patrick Cline.
