Chatting About Women In Entrepreneurship With Besties In Business

In a beautiful studio in Bushwick, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by the Besties In Business, Xochitl Gonzalez and Myra Castillo. We talked about everything from writing a book, the state of blogging, and marrying the right guy who will support your business dreams. If you’re a female entrepreneur looking for insights into growing your brand, I invite you to whip up a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy this fun interview.

Welcome 2015

Welcome to AphroChic in 2015! We are moving into our eighth year of writing this blog and bringing you content from around the globe, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s to come in the year ahead. We’ve finally made some moves (the first is that we’re now headquartered in Brooklyn) to grow AphroChic into a bigger and better site for you. This year expect more original house tours, video segments and some great designer interviews (the first one is coming up this afternoon, and it’s a BIG one). We invite you to peruse the new site, which includes some great features when reading blog posts. You can now scroll through galleries at the top of each page. Just click the little arrows to enjoy some great large-scale photos. And at the bottom of each page, you can easily share posts you like with your social networks. We invite you to pin, tweet and facebook away. Finally, you’ll notice we’re very social around here, so click on our top or bottom bar to follow AphroChic on Instagram, YouTube and Bloglovin. It’s a new year and a new vision for AphroChic, but you can’t go forward without looking at the past. We dug into our archives, and found our original vision statement for the brand, that still holds true. This is what we believe and want to share with all of you:

We Believe

That home should be a personal reflection of who you are.

That the most beautiful rooms tell a story.

We believe in a new kind of luxury; in reveling in life’s simple pleasures.

That good design doesn’t have to sacrifice the environment.

That city girls can rock organic tees and natural hair while taking trips to the farmer’s market.

That country girls can love Philippe Starck Ghost Chairs and trips to New York Fashion Week.

That even a single life can have diversity.

We believe in Sunday brunch, flea market adventures, and coming home to a space you love.

In cultural reflection, ethnic-inspired prints, and embracing a global lifestyle.

We believe that anyone can have modern soulful style.

LA Magazine Coverage of Room & Board LA Book Party

Last year we had a fabulous book party at the Room & Board in Culver City, Los Angeles. We like to say “book party” because, in partnership with Room & Board, we have updated the idea of a typical book signing event. We don’t want you to come just for a signing, we want you to come for an experience that truly celebrates what our book, REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul is all about. DJ D’Auria had us dancing to the soulful tunes you’ll find in the house tours of REMIX. Celebrity chef, Chef Ameera delighted us with her healthy soul food menu. And throughout Room & Board you could find vignettes “remixed” by AphroChic.

Bryan and I gave a design talk, speaking about the inspiration for REMIX, and the vignettes we created at Room & Board.

Design stars came out, including my Spelman Sister, Tanika Ray.

Matthew Lanphier, interior designer to the Kardashians was in the house. You can see a beautiful Studio City home he designed throughout the pages of REMIX. With him was one of our favorite artists Lana Gomez, recent CH+D Awards winner, whose art is featured in REMIX.

LA bloggers were in attendance, including Megan Arquette of Beach Bungalow 8.

Abby Stone of Apartment Therapy and Christian May of Maison 21.

Chef Ameera (above) created a phenomenal menu for the event. She brought our focus on soulful style to life with delicious vegan dishes including fried chicken, chili, and the yummiest sweet potato cupcakes ever!

We always have fun styling our own vignettes in the Room & Board stores. In this living room we used two of the hottest colors this year – cerulean blue and mimosa yellow, with a strong neutral gray, to design what we’re calling “a modern bachelorette pad”.

No bachelorette pad would be complete without a fierce Beyonce gallery wall featuring Room & Board’s new Steel Frames in gold. Bryan had a lot of fun curating the images for this vignette and it was a hit at the party!

In the bedroom we added a lot of pattern and texture, using our The Vibe and Silhouette pillows with Room & Board’s Jacquard Wool Zig-Zag bedding.

In the bedroom a black and white photo of Tina Turner add a little “diva style” to the vignette.

Our Haze Mimosa Runner added a pop of color to the dining room table. Above the credenza, we created a stunning focal point with a wall display of Room & Board’s collection of handmade Makenge Baskets.

Thank you to our book tour partner, Room & Board, to our media partner, Los Angeles Magazine, and to everyone who came out to support our LA book party! You can see more images from the event over at Los Angeles Magazine.

Jeanine’s Prized Possession In Anthology Magazine

I am really excited to share with you an interview I did with Anthology Magazine about my Prized Possession. In the issue you can read all about a photograph from my childhood home that truly inspired my vision for AphroChic. It was such a fun shoot with photographer Courtney Apple, and don’t you just love that chair I’m sitting in? It’s a gorgeous reupholstered piece by Chairloom here in the Philadelphia area. You can read all about Chairloom and my Prized Possession in the Winter 2014 issue of Anthology. The magazine can be found in Anthropologie stores or you can subscribe.
